In the year 2022, a new supervillain emerges in Gotham City. The mysterious villain is wreaking havoc throughout the city, and Bruce Wayne returns to put an end to it.
This year, the Batman series celebrates its 80th anniversary with a movie that will take us back to what made Batman such an iconic character in the first place — his detective skills.
What do you think will happen in this movie? Let's talk about it!
Batman 2022 is a 2022 superhero film based on the DC Comics character Batman. It is a sequel to Batman 2020 and the third installment in the DC Extended Universe. The film was written by Matthew Vaughn, directed by Timur Bekmambetov, and stars Christian Bale as Batman, with Heath Ledger, Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, Cillian Murphy, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Gary Oldman reprising their roles from Batman Begins (2005), alongside Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle and Tom Hardy as Bane.
In the aftermath of The Dark Knight Rises (2012), Bruce Wayne has retired from crime fighting and Gotham City is seeing a time of peace. However, this is all about to change when a new threat emerges in the form of the mysterious Selina Kyle. In order to stop her from carrying out her evil plans, Bruce must once again don the cape and cowl to save Gotham City from complete destruction.
The thing I've noticed about these DC movies is that none of them give any indication that the viewer has to be familiar with anything else before seeing them. It's all very self contained, and the only references are to things within the same movie.
This is in stark contrast to Marvel's approach, where each film builds on what came before, and is constantly referencing other films in the series. I suspect this is because Marvel knows that most people will see all their movies, because they're all good. But DC can't afford to take this risk (and it's not like they have a cinematic universe full of good movies right now), so they have to make each movie stand alone as well as possible.
But I do have some concerns about Batman 2022. For example, who is Batman? We've seen Robert Pattinson in costume, but we don't know if he'll have superpowers or if he'll just be a rich guy with gadgets. Or what's going to happen to the Joker? We saw him kill Robin in the last film, but he was later revealed to be Robin's son Damian Wayne.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Emmerich said that Matt Reeves' upcoming film would not be inspired by any of the previous Batman movies and will be an original story that has not been seen before.
"It's very much a point of view-driven, noir Batman tale," Emmerich said. "It's told very squarely on his shoulders, and I hope it's going to be a story that will be thrilling but also emotional. It's more Batman in his detective mode than we've seen in the films. The comics have a history of that. He's supposed to be the world's greatest detective, and that's not necessarily been a part of what the movies have been."
